Your birth time is critical because planetary positions change constantly throughout the day. Even a few minutes difference can change which Gates are activated, potentially altering your Type, Authority, Profile, or Channel definitions. For the most accurate chart, use the exact time recorded on your birth certificate. If you don't know your birth time, you can request it from the hospital or vital records office where you were born.

The types of Authority include: Emotional/Solar Plexus Authority (wait for emotional clarity over time), Sacral Authority (gut response — uh-huh or un-un), Splenic Authority (instant intuitive knowing), Ego/Heart Authority (willpower-based decisions), Self-Projected Authority (talk it out to hear your truth), Mental/Environmental Authority (use your environment as a sounding board), and Lunar Authority (for Reflectors who wait a lunar cycle).

The 9 Centers in the Human Design Bodygraph are: Head Center (inspiration and mental pressure), Ajna Center (conceptualization and mental awareness), Throat Center (communication and manifestation), G Center/Self Center (identity, love, and direction), Heart/Ego Center (willpower, ego, and material world), Sacral Center (life force, sexuality, and work capacity), Solar Plexus Center (emotions and feelings), Spleen Center (survival instincts, immunity, and intuition), and Root Center (adrenaline pressure and drive). Centers can be Defined (colored) or Undefined/Open (white).

Gates are the 64 energetic themes in the Bodygraph, derived from the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. Each Gate represents a specific quality or archetype of energy. When two Gates at opposite ends of a Channel are both activated (by planetary positions at your birth), they form a defined Channel — creating a consistent energy flow between two Centers. There are 36 possible Channels. Defined Channels represent fixed qualities in your nature that are always operating.

Defined Centers (colored in your chart) represent consistent, reliable energy that you broadcast to others. These are energies you can depend on. Undefined/Open Centers (white in your chart) are where you receive, amplify, and are conditioned by the energy of others. Open Centers are NOT weaknesses — they are places of wisdom and deep sensitivity, but also where you may take on other people's energy and make decisions that aren't correct for you (the Not-Self).

The Not-Self Theme is the emotional signal that tells you when you're NOT living according to your design. Each Type has a specific Not-Self Theme: Generators experience Frustration when they initiate instead of responding; Manifesting Generators feel Frustration and Anger; Projectors experience Bitterness when they're not recognized or invited; Manifestors feel Anger when they meet resistance from not informing; and Reflectors experience Disappointment when they rush decisions instead of waiting a lunar cycle.

Variables are an advanced aspect of Human Design that describe how you're designed to take in and process information. They include four components: Determination/Digestion (Design Sun — how your body is designed to eat and take in nutrition), Environment (Design Earth — what physical environment supports your body), Motivation (Personality Sun — what drives your mind), and Perspective/View (Personality Earth — how you see the world). Variables are indicated by the arrows at the top of the traditional Bodygraph.

A Human Design Chart is calculated using two sets of planetary positions: 1) Your Personality (conscious) activations — the planetary positions at your exact moment of birth, and 2) Your Design (unconscious) activations — the planetary positions approximately 88 degrees of the Sun's arc before your birth (roughly 88-92 days before birth). Each planet's position is mapped to one of the 64 Gates. When both ends of a Channel are activated, the Centers connected by that Channel become Defined.

The Incarnation Cross is determined by the Gate positions of your Personality Sun/Earth and Design Sun/Earth. It represents your life purpose or the theme of your life's journey. There are 192 basic Incarnation Cross configurations, falling into three categories: Right Angle Crosses (personal destiny), Left Angle Crosses (transpersonal karma), and Juxtaposition Crosses (fixed fate). The Incarnation Cross only becomes relevant when you've been living your Strategy and Authority correctly.

Absolutely. By understanding your own design and your partner's design, you can gain insight into how your energies interact. When you compare two charts (called a Composite or Connection Chart), you can see where you define each other's Centers, create new Channels together, and understand the electromagnetic attraction between you. Understanding each other's Types, Strategies, and Authorities can dramatically improve communication and reduce conflict.

Definition refers to how your defined Centers are connected. Single Definition means all your defined Centers are connected in one continuous circuit — you process energy independently. Split Definition means your defined Centers form two or more separate groups — you need others to 'bridge' the gap between your defined areas. There's also Triple Split and Quadruple Split. About 46% of people have Split Definition, while about 41% have Single Definition.

Human Design uses the same planetary positions as Western Astrology but interprets them differently. Instead of mapping planets to zodiac signs and houses, Human Design maps planetary positions to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching (which correspond to the 64 Gates of the Bodygraph).
