How the Chart Is Built: Inputs → Outputs
The genius of the system is that everything downstream is derived, not assigned. From three inputs, a deterministic chain produces your entire design:
Inputs: birth date + exact birth time + birth place ↓ Astronomy: the precise position of 13 planetary bodies, calculated twice — at birth (Personality / conscious) and ~88° of solar arc earlier, about 88 days before birth (Design / unconscious) ↓ Gates & Lines: each planetary position lands in 1 of 64 Gates and 1 of 6 lines ↓ Channels & Centers: when two connected gates are both activated, they form a Channel, which defines the two Centers it links ↓ Type, Strategy, Authority, Profile, Variables, Incarnation Cross: all read off the pattern above

- Astrology gives the system its sky. Human Design uses the same tropical zodiac and the same planets as Western astrology — but discards houses and aspects.
- The I Ching gives it its alphabet. The wheel is divided into the 64 hexagrams; each becomes a Gate with a distinct archetypal theme.
- The Kabbalah gives it its wiring. The Tree of Life's pathways inspire the 36 Channels that carry energy between centers.
- The Chakra system gives it its anatomy. The traditional 7 chakras are reorganized into 9 Centers (the throat, sacral, and others), reflecting a model of human evolution.
- Genetics & quantum physics give it its modern framing — the 64 gates mapped to the 64 codons of DNA, and the dual Personality/Design imprint described in terms of the body as a vehicle the "personality crystal" rides in.
The Reading Stack: From Headline to Fine Print
Once your chart is built, you read it in layers — broad to fine. This is the through-line of the whole system:
- Type — your core energy mechanic (one of five Energy Types).
- Strategy — how your Type is meant to engage with life.
- Authority — your reliable, body-based decision-making compass.
- Profile — your "costume" for learning and relating (e.g., the 1/3 Investigator-Martyr).
- Centers — which of the 9 are defined (consistent) vs. open (receptive).
- Channels & Gates — the specifics of how your centers are wired (including double activations).
- Variables — the four arrows: Determination, Environment, Motivation, and Perspective.
- Incarnation Cross — your life-purpose theme, from your four Sun/Earth gates.

Human Design was received by Ra Uru Hu (born Robert Alan Krakower) during an eight-day mystical experience in 1987 — the full founder story is its own remarkable read. He spent the rest of his life teaching and structuring it into the body of knowledge taught today.
Since then, the original system has branched into several lineages that re-language or extend it:
