If you've typed "my Human Design" into a search bar, you usually want two things: to find your own chart, and to understand what it actually says about you — not a textbook tour of the whole system.
This guide does exactly that. We'll generate your chart, then walk the five things to read first, in the order that matters. By the end you'll be able to answer "what is my Human Design?" in a single confident sentence — and know what to do with it on Monday morning.
First: Generate Your Chart (2 Minutes, Free)
Your Human Design chart — the bodygraph — is calculated from three pieces of birth data:
- Date of birth
- Exact time of birth (this matters; even 20 minutes can shift your result)
- Place of birth (city + country)
Head to our free Human Design Chart Calculator, enter those three details, and you'll get your complete bodygraph instantly. Everything is calculated in your browser — your birth data is never sent to or stored on a server. No account, no email, no payment.
Don't know your exact birth time? Check your birth certificate first. If it's truly unavailable, generate the chart anyway with your best estimate, but treat the time-sensitive parts (Authority, Profile, and Variables) as provisional. Your Type and most Centers are usually stable across a few hours.
Once you're looking at your chart, come back here and read it with us.
The 5 Things to Read First (In This Order)
Most people open their chart, see a colorful diagram full of numbers, and freeze. Don't. You only need five things to start, and they build on each other:
| # | What to find | Why it matters | The one question it answers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Type | Your overall energy mechanic | How am I built to use energy? |
| 2 | Strategy | How to engage with life correctly | How should I approach decisions and opportunities? |
| 3 | Authority | Your inner decision-making compass | How do I know what's a true yes? |
| 4 | Profile | Your "costume" — how you learn and connect | How do I move through the world? |
| 5 | Centers | Where you're consistent vs. open | Where am I reliable, and where do I take in others' energy? |
Everything else — gates, channels, Incarnation Cross, Variables — is detail you can layer in later. These five are the load-bearing walls.
1. Your Type — The Headline
Your chart names you as one of five Energy Types. This is the single most useful word in your whole design:
- Generator (~37%) — sustainable life-force energy; built to respond to what lights you up.
- Manifesting Generator (~33%) — a faster, multi-passionate Generator who responds then informs.
- Projector (~20%) — here to guide and see others, not to out-work them; thrives on recognition and invitation.
- Manifestor (~9%) — the initiator; built to start things and inform before acting.
- Reflector (~1%) — rare, lunar, and deeply sensitive to environment; samples the health of a community.
If you only remember one thing about your design, remember your Type. We go deep on all five in Understanding the 5 Energy Types.
2. Your Strategy — Your Green Light
Each Type has a Strategy — the way you're designed to meet life so that things flow instead of grind:
- Generators & MGs: Wait to respond (then trust the gut).
- Projectors: Wait for the invitation / recognition (for the big things — career, relationships, where to live).
- Manifestors: Inform before you act.
- Reflectors: Wait a full lunar cycle (~28 days) before major decisions.
Strategy sounds passive. It isn't. It's the difference between forcing a door and walking through one that opens.
3. Your Authority — Your Inner Yes
Authority is where in your body the correct decision shows up — and it overrides your busy mind. Your chart will show one of these:
- Emotional (Solar Plexus) — the most common. There is no truth in the now; sleep on it, ride the emotional wave, and decide once you're calm and clear.
- Sacral — a gut "uh-huh / un-un" response in the moment (Generators/MGs only).
- Splenic — a quiet, one-time intuitive hit; act on the first impulse.
- Ego/Heart — decide from what you genuinely want and have the willpower for.
- Self-Projected — talk it out loud; the truth is in what you hear yourself say.
- Mental/Environmental — no inner authority; use trusted sounding boards and the right environment.
- Lunar — Reflectors; let the answer mature over ~28 days.
Type + Strategy + Authority is the operating core of Human Design. The other four are nice; these three change your life.
4. Your Profile — Your Costume
Your Profile is two numbers, like 1/3 or 5/1, drawn from the line positions of your conscious and unconscious Sun. It describes how you learn and engage — the investigator, the natural genius, the experimenter, the role model, and so on. Find your two numbers, then read the matching guide (for example, our 1/3 Investigator-Martyr deep dive). It explains a lot about why you operate the way you do.
5. Your Centers — Defined vs. Open
The nine shapes in your bodygraph are Centers. Colored-in (defined) centers are where you're consistent and self-reliant. White (open/undefined) centers are where you're flexible, receptive, and amplify energy from other people — your areas of potential wisdom and of conditioning. Knowing your open centers explains where you tend to "lose yourself" around others. For the full walkthrough, see How to Read Your Human Design Bodygraph.
Turning "My Human Design" Into Daily Life
Reading your chart is easy. Living it is the experiment. Here's how to actually apply your results this week:
- Say your design out loud. "I'm a Projector with Splenic Authority, 5/1." Naming it makes it usable.
- Run your Strategy once a day. Notice one moment where you forced something vs. waited for the right opening.
- Trust your Authority on one real decision. Emotional? Sleep on it. Sacral? Check the gut before the head talks you out of it.
- Watch one open center. Notice when you're amplifying someone else's mood, pressure, or energy as if it were your own.
- Be patient. Ra Uru Hu suggested a seven-year experiment, not a weekend. Small, repeated course-corrections are the whole game.
A Note on Trust (Read This)
Human Design is a synthesis of astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah, the chakra system, and modern science — and it is not empirically proven by mainstream science. We don't present it as fact; we present it as a self-knowledge framework you can test against your own experience. As its founder put it:
"Don't believe a word of it. Run the experiment. See what happens in your own life."
That's the right relationship to have with your chart: useful if it works for you, harmless to set down if it doesn't. (And because our calculator runs entirely in your browser, experimenting costs you nothing and reveals none of your data.)
FAQ
What is my Human Design type?
Your Type is determined by which Centers are defined and how they connect to your Throat. Generate your chart on the calculator and your Type (Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, or Reflector) is shown at the top of the result.
Do I need my exact birth time?
For your Type and most Centers, an approximate time is often fine. For Authority, Profile, and Variables, the exact minute can matter — these are the most time-sensitive parts of the chart. Use your birth certificate when possible.
Is "my Human Design" the same as my star sign?
No. Your sun sign is one data point in Western astrology. Human Design uses your entire planetary chart — plus a second calculation from ~88 days before birth — mapped onto the 64 gates. They share astronomy but produce very different maps. See Human Design vs Astrology.
Where do I go after reading my Type, Strategy, and Authority?
Layer in your Profile, then your defined/open Centers, then explore your gates and channels. The bodygraph reading guide is the natural next step.
Can I get a deeper, personalized reading?
Yes — once you've generated your chart you can explore a written, in-depth report that interprets your specific combination. Start free on the chart page; the deeper reading is optional.
